What is DTD 4.5?
DTD 4.5 is an "intermediate" DTD that was originally introduced for Elsevier-internal data conversion and storage purposes. This was needed when the original Electronic Warehouse (EW) that stores and delivers all journal content, was completely rebuilt in 2004-2005. The new EW is based on many new technologies including XML and all original (backfile)content in SGML was converted to XML based on a DTD (version 4.5) that closely resembles the current Elsevier DTD 5.0 for new XML-based articles but which nevertheless deviates based on the conversion results. The consequence of this conversion is that a journal issue "from the past" cannot be delivered in its original SGML format, but will be delivered in the converted XML format. Please note: XML DTD 4.5 only applies for converted original-SGML content. All journal issues going forward will be formatted according to XML DTD 5.0.
Why are you going to send content in DTD 4.5?
Customers regularly claim journal issues for (re-)delivery. Reasons for that are that the journal issue was never received in the first place, or for instance artwork in the journal issue is of poor quality and needs to be re-produced. An increasing number of such claims is for journal issues that are only currently stored in DTD 4.5, and in order to fulfil customer claims as diligently as possible we decided to deliver these issues directly in this DTD from our Electronic Warehouse. This DTD will not be used for the delivery of newly published material.
What is the benefit to me?
The main benefits to you, as a customer, are that the turnaround time for fulfilling certain claims for journal issues is reduced, and that all articles can be delivered in their most up-to-date and clean state.
So, where's the catch?
Your hosting platform might not be able to handle DTD 4.5 correctly yet, in which case you will have to make some changes to your systems. To support you in that process, we have posted support information and sample data sets on the ScienceDirect Info Site:

If you are currently using Endeavor's Journals OnSite (or are planning to in the future): Endeavor will adapt Journals OnSite to be able to handle DTD 4.5 material correctly. For additional information about this, please contact your Endeavor representative.
