Federated Searching / XML Gateway
Federated searching, also known as meta-searching, cross- or broadcast searching, is the concept of using a single search portal to search through and retrieve results from multiple online resources at once. Scopus and also ScienceDirect customers are increasingly deploying such portals in their organizations, and have repeatedly indicated that Scopus and ScienceDirect are valuable online resources for inclusion in these portals.
In response to these demands, Scopus and ScienceDirect have developed an XML gateway allowing both Scopus and ScienceDirect content to be targeted from federated search portals that are used by customers with a full license to Scopus and ScienceDirect.
The benefit of utilizing the XML gateway is its stability, reliability and accuracy compared to "screen-scraping", also known as HTTP searching, which tends to be less stable and can change unexpectedly, affecting the output. Scopus does not support the Z39.50 standard.
Please refer to the FAQs for more detailed information on federated search support, or contact E-Helpdesk.
Selected Sources
Selected Sources is a fully customizable feature that enables users to search within selected repositories or subject specific digital archives within the Scopus interface. It allows customers to choose from a list of institutional resources and special subject collections indexed by Scirus to be made individually searchable in a separate tab.
For a list of currently available sources to choose from see the Selected Sources list.
Librarians can request for their own institutes' repositories and digital archive to be indexed and made searchable through the Scopus interface. For further information and conditions contact the Scirus team.
This feature enhances traditional literature searching by providing easy access to non-published intellectual output such as theses, lecture notes, presentations, manuscripts and prepress papers.
Additionally, it provides exposure to the research carried out at institutes that offer their repositories online and it bridges the gap between traditional and new search environments.
