Description:

Need full-text but not at your desk? The SciVerse ScienceDirect mobile app doesn't restrict your brainwaves to the workplace; now you can find and read your subscribed Elsevier article while you're at a conference, traveling to and from work, or enjoying some rare downtime.

If your institutional library subscribes to SciVerse ScienceDirect online then you can access exactly the same journals from your mobile devices you don't even have to think about it. The screen is smaller but the familiar content is all there. With SciVerse ScienceDirect mobile app, you can look up and read a paper, share the article, or just explore what's out there anytime you get a bright idea.

In addition to all the standard features offered in the free version, this Premium version also allows you to browse journal by Journal Name; by Subject Area or in Favourites. You can always add a journal/journals to Favourites; when new journal content has been issued that matches your search criteria, you will be updated by the alert.

FAQ:

Registration and Authentication

Q: What do I need in order to access the full features?
A: Your institution must be subscribed to SciVerse ScienceDirect. You will need to provide your username and password as registered at sciencedirect.com and your institutional e-mail address. Once you have supplied this information, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. You must click on the link provided in this e-mail to activate your access to SciVerse ScienceDirect mobile application. You will only need to confirm your email once.

Q: What if I did not receive a confirmation email?
A: You will have the option to request another validation e-mail. You may not have received the validation e-mail because the e-mail address provided is incorrect. Please double check that it has been entered correctly.

Q: My log in authentication has failed.
A: You need to check that your username and password are exactly the same as those used when registering on sciencedirect.com. If you haven't registered on sciencedirect.com yet, you can go to www.sciencedirect.com/science/newregistration to create your own username and password. Make sure that the e-mail address you use is the one given to you by the institution providing access to SciVerse ScienceDirect. If you use a free e-mail provider such as Yahoo or Gmail, we will not be able to provide you with access to your institution's subscribed content. If you still encounter problems please contact our helpdesk.

Q: Can I use my username and password on more than one device?
A: Yes, your username and password can be used on up to three different devices. You can therefore access SciVerse ScienceDirect mobile app from your Blackberry, Android, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch using the same log in details. Once used on a device, you can delete that device from your list of three by contacting our helpdesk.

Searching

Q: How do I perform a search?
A: You can either run a generic search, using the default, 'all' field, or you can choose to limit your search to articles by a specific author or by a specific journal. When first using the search function, you will see an example. Afterwards, when you open the search screen for either all, author or journals search, you will see a list of previous terms you used for searching (search history).

Q: How many items can be stored in the search history?
A: The search history list is limited to 500 items. When reaching this limit the oldest searches will be removed and newest items added at the top of the list.

Q: Can I perform a wildcard search?
A: For keyword, author and journal searches you can use wildcard searching (? for single character and * for zero or more characters). You can also use loose phrase searching (i.e. search term within double quotes "search term") and exact phrase search (i.e. search term within curly brackets {search term}). SciVerse ScienceDirect iPhone app searches also support Boolean character searches such as - AND, OR, AND NOT, PRE/ and W/.

Sharing

Q: Can I send the article to a colleague?
A: All users can e-mail a link to the article, regardless if they are entitled to see the Full Text or not. Only subscribed users will however be able to access the full text of that article on SciVerse ScienceDirect. Users that are not subscribed to the full text will see a free layer of that article.

Q: Can I share my access details with a colleague?
A: Access to the application is by means of a username and password. These details should never be shared with anyone especially as they enable you to personalize the service and keep track of saved records.

General

Q: Can I search and view books content?
A: For now, all users will be able to search and view articles from Journals and Book Series. In future releases, books will be included as well.

Q: Can I personalize my Home page?
A: You can choose to personalize the list of items you see displayed on the start screen by clicking 'set alert' from any search results page. You can do this after having run a generic, author or journal specific search, and by doing that, the latest items matching your criteria will always appear on your application start page If you choose not to personalize your Home page, three generic recent articles will be shown when you launch the app.

Q: Can I save articles on my mobile device?
A: All users, regardless of their type of subscription have the option to save the article they are viewing locally, for offline use. The article saved will match the user entitlements to full text. Once saved, these articles will be available from either the homepage or the general tab bar.

Q: Can I view articles saved on SciVerse ScienceDirect mobile app through my desktop computer?
A: For now it's not possible to coordinate your saved articles between the SciVerse ScienceDirect mobile app and sciencedirect.com from the Internet. This means that articles and searches you've saved in the mobile app will not be stored in sciencedirect.com account but you can email saved article records to yourself.

Q: Why do I only see thumbnail images and tables?
A: Full size images and tables can only be accessed along with the Full-Text article when entitled to.

Q: Am I able to zoom in and out on an image?
A: Only users with Full Text permission can view full size images. If you have been given institutional access you can zoom in and out using the mobile device’ two finger zoom action on the screen.
