Accessing ScienceDirect at your licensed institute

No - Users are automatically recognized via their IP address as a user at a licensed institute. No username and password is needed to view content

For users to access ScienceDirect off campus they must request a username from their librarian. Librarians can obtain these user IDs by contacting ScienceDirect E-Helpdesk

To save searches/set up alerts:

Yes - In order to take advantage of personalization features (e.g. search alerts, new journal issue alerts, favorite journal lists etc), users need to be logged in.

A username that a user registered him/herself on-campus will not allow access to content or alerts off-campus. A user must request a special username from their librarian for this (see below)

Accessing ScienceDirect from home or other remote locations

Yes - Users must use a special username and password given to them by their librarian for this purpose
