Introduction

XML, the eXtensible Markup Language, is the successor of Standard Generalized Markup Language, SGML. The Elsevier DTDs as of version 4.5 are written for XML, and they make use of XML standards such as MathML, XLink and Unicode. A family of DTDs supports a variety of content types: journal articles, books, secondary material, etc. The XML journal article DTD is applied across all Elsevier journals since 2004. Also all original SGML material has been converted to XML.

A generalized markup language means, that presentation-independent structuring ("tagging") of the content can be applied to documents, allowing them to be published on many platforms in different forms (e.g., in the printed journal issue and on ScienceDirect). A DTD (document type definition) describes which tags and character entities may be used in the files and which rules applies to these tags. It is needed to enable validation of the XML files. DTD development in Elsevier began in the late 1980s, producing a sequence of full-length article DTDs, initially in SGML (the latest being version 4.3.1) and subsequently in XML.
