How to Generate a Complete List of Journal and Book Series Titles on ScienceDirect

If you are a ScienceDirect customer, you can generate various lists of titles covered by ScienceDirect by clicking on “My Settings” in the navigation bar in ScienceDirect and select the "ScienceDirect Electronic Holdings Report". 

If you are not a ScienceDirect customer, you can generate a generic list showing all titles both available and not available on ScienceDirect with the ScienceDirect Electronic Holdings Report.

Active Titles

Active titles are those that are currently being published.

This list represents journals where some or all content is universally available, or where the recent archives have been made available to all users at no charge.

Note: In addition to these titles, many of Elsevier's journals offer the first issue of a year as a free sample copy. Occasionally issues are made freely available for promotional purposes but this information is not included in this list as it is changeable and temporary.

Publication Changes

Overviews of recently added, forthcoming, transferred, change of titles, discontinued or removed titles. 

New titles - Journals launched in ScienceDirect in the past 3 months since the last update.

Changed/Incorporated titles - Journals with name changes, incorporated into another title, or were split off from a title to form a new title

Discontinued titles - Journals that are still owned by Elsevier but no longer published.

Transferred titles - Society journals no longer published by Elsevier as these have been transferred to another publisher. Whenever possible all efforts are made to retain the electronic rights to keep them available on ScienceDirect.

Removed titles - Society journals now published by another publisher. Unfortunately, societies do not always grant the electronic rights in order for Elsevier to retain the content on ScienceDirect, consequently the content, may have to be completely removed.

Freedom Collection; Subject Collections and Included/Excluded Titles...

Freedom Collection

The Freedom Collection is available to ScienceDirect Complete academic customers only and offers an opportunity to access all non-subscribed Elsevier journal content at a significantly reduced rate. A few titles are not included due to conflicting business models, e.g., Cell Press titles, Lancet titles, and Clinics, or they are third party titles. In addition, not all societies allow their journals to be included in this offering.

Subject Collections

Subject Collections offer a cost-effective way for ScienceDirect Complete license customers to gain additional access to the depth of content in a specific field on ScienceDirect, at a significantly reduced rate. 

As of 2010, the Subject Collections only contain journals that are ‘active’, ‘discontinued’ or ‘forthcoming’.  Access will be granted to all predecessors and incorporated titles, following the internal linking rules implemented in ScienceDirect.

Not all titles can be included in all discounted collections due to legal issues and/or conflicts of interest, or they are third party titles. The list is subject to change as electronic rights for a title can change.

Missing issues account for less than 0.2% of all content in the Backfiles Collections. Elsevier will continue to seek out and digitize missing issues until all the missing content is found.

Image Rescanning Project

The Image Rescanning Project  to replace low-quality images in the Backfles Collections is completed. However, in some case we are still looking for the high-quality source files. Click here  to view issues which need to be sourced in order to fill gaps and replace poor-quality images.
