Marc Records FAQ

Printer-friendly version

The following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) will answer most questions about signing up to receive the MARC records.

Q: Is there a charge for the records?
A: No. The records are a free service included in your ScienceDirect subscription and OCLC does not bill for the records.

Q: How do I access my MARC records?
A: Follow these easy steps to gain quick access to your MARC records.

  1. Log into the ScienceDirect Admin Tool.
  2. Under the ScienceDirect tab, in the section Content Coverage and Entitlements click on the link MARC records
  3. On the Setup Account for MARC Records Service, select the “Setup OCLC Account” button. You will then be directed to OCLC
  4. After completing either new registration or confirming the linking of your ScienceDirect account and OCLC account, you will receive a status message of registration, either ‘Pending OCLC Approval’ or ‘Waiting for OCLC Response’
  5. You will then be notified by email when your ScienceDirect account is ready to receive MARC records (this typically takes 24-48 hours to process)
  6. After completing registration, you have the option to modify your ScienceDirect Account to subscribe to standing orders and receive the records added to your ScienceDirect Account on a regular basis. To do this, click on the ‘Modify OCLC Account’ button to change your OCLC profile.

If at any time you wish to make this change after registration click on the ‘Edit Accounts Page’ and change the details in the ‘ScienceDirect Options’ box.

  5. Once you click either of these two options, start the ordering process by clicking the ‘Submit’ button

Q: How will my records be delivered?
A: You can access all your MARC records via your existing EDX subscription or through OCLC’s Product Services Web.

Q: What if my library is located outside the United States?
A: Libraries located outside of the United States may order records just as readily as those within the United States.

Q: Will my library’s holdings be set in WorldCat?
A: Yes, your libraries holdings will be set in WorldCat.

Q: In what file format will the records be?
A: The files delivered through both services are in MARC 21 format using the MARC-8 character set. They are not Unicode. More information on the MARC-8 character set may be found at: http://www.loc.gov/marc/specifications/speccharmarc8.html.
Our delivery services do not support MAB format, nor can OCLC deliver tab (or other) delimited files.

Q: For what books products can I order MARC records free of charge?
A: At the moment this process is only supported for the eBooks collections. It’s our aim that in the future we will also provide this for our MRWs, Handbook and Book Series
