ScienceDirect Freedom Collection

The Freedom Collection is available to ScienceDirect Complete customers only (academic institutes). It offers the chance to get access to all non- subscribed Elsevier journal content at a significantly reduced rate.

This is an access only model and starts from the date of your existing ScienceDirect subscription, with a minimum of four backfile years plus the current year building. Your access is cumulative as long as you renew your license and subscription to the Freedom Collection. Freedom Collection offers no continued access rights for material that was not previously fully subscribed to, if you cancel your ScienceDirect license.

Freedom Collection freeze

On December 1, of each year, the Freedom Collection list of included titles is “frozen” for the following subscription year starting January 1. The freeze gives customers clarity and stability because it ensures that titles that are new, discontinued or transferred can only be added to, or removed from, the list once a year (on December 1 of the previous year).

The contents of the ScienceDirect Freedom Collection will be fixed from December 1 to December 1 of the following year, with no planned title changes between those dates.
The price for the Freedom Collection is set annually on July 1 to better assist you with your budgeting process. This procedure is the same as previous years.

Titles excluded from discounted Collections, e.g., Freedom Collection

Due to business model restrictions, or legal stipulations in some publishing contracts between Elsevier and various societies, some titles are excluded from one or more discounted packages, (e.g., Freedom Collection, or Subject Collections). Examples of such titles are, Cell Press titles, Lancet titles, Seminars, Clinics of North America, third party owned titles and some society titles. There are also some titles that are excluded due to their transferred status, whereby we no longer publish the current title issues for the society and do not have the electronic rights to make them available in Freedom or Subject collections. To avoid confusion we have compiled a consolidated list of the titles concerned.

These titles are only available at the full subscription price (print + electronic or electronic only).

Pricing and Availability

The Freedom Collection is only available to academic institutions with a ScienceDirect Complete license, and not consortia.

Customer pays a percentage extra for the non-subscribed content at a highly discounted rate, but doesn't have archival rights for these not fully subscribed titles.
