MARC Records Program

Elsevier is pleased to provide high quality MARC records created by OCLC® to customers who have purchased books on SciVerse ScienceDirect. MARC records are available at no charge for all ScienceDirect books.

Methods of Ordering MARC Records

1.  Collection Set Order Form

Download and complete the Excel order form, and then follow the included instructions to place your order with OCLC. The form can be used to order record sets for complete collections and to place a standing order for collections with forthcoming titles. An option is provided for specifying OCLC parameters and custom values. If you have any difficulty, please contact your Elsevier account manager or our Help Desk.

2.  Collection Set Orders Using the OCLC WorldCat Collection Sets Webpage

Order online using the WorldCat Collection Sets Service. If you have not previously registered with OCLC, you will need to do this now. Once you have registered you can download collection sets for complete packages or place a standing order for frontlist collections with forthcoming titles. An option is provided for specifying OCLC parameters and custom values. If you have any difficulty, please contact your Elsevier account manager or our Help Desk.

3.  Order MARC Records for Individual Books

Some customers may need to order records for individual titles, including:

  • Major Reference Works
  • Textbooks
  • Individually selected titles

To place an order for individual titles, please contact your Elsevier account manager or our Help Desk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a charge for the records?
A: No. The records are a free service included in your ScienceDirect subscription. OCLC will not charge you for the records.

Q: How will my records be delivered?
A: You can access all your MARC records via your existing EDX subscription or through OCLC’s Product Services Web.

Q: What if my library is located outside the United States?
A: Libraries located outside of the United States may order records just as readily as those within the United States.

Q: Will my library’s holdings be set in WorldCat?
A: Yes, your libraries holdings will be set in WorldCat.

Q: What is the format for the records?
A: The system provides files in MARC 21 format using the MARC-8 character set. They are not Unicode. More information on the MARC-8 character set may be found at: http://www.loc.gov/marc/specifications/speccharmarc8.html.  Our delivery services do not support MAB format, nor can OCLC deliver tab (or other) delimited files.

Sample records can be downloaded here in two formats

  • MARC-21 format (actual .mrc file)
  • PDF (easy-to-read format)

Q: Are MARC records provided for all books on ScienceDirect?
A: Yes.

Q: When are records provided for frontlist titles?
A: Records for front list titles are made available as each book is published on ScienceDirect. If you have ordered a frontlist collection set, records will be sent to you automatically.

Q: Are free MARC records provided for ScienceDirect journals?
A: Elsevier does not provide free records for journals. Customers needed these records may purchase them from OCLC and other third-party providers.

If these FAQs don’t answer your questions or you are having any difficulties with your MARC records, please contact us.
